For the past 170 years or so, population growth in California has been, essentially, assured. That goes double for the Los Angeles region, which grew tenfold in the past century. Not so anymore. From 2019 to 2023, California’s population declined by almost a half-million, and the county’s population stagnated too. Even with a recent uptick, the long-term future looks very different from the past. That’s a crucial consideration for developers and planners, who must look decades into the future to decide how projects will perform and how cities should look.
In light of lower rates of in-migration and natural increase (births vs. deaths), Los Angeles’ population growth -- if it happens -- will have to be driven by other factors, such as availability of housing. And, even if the region does grow, the composition of the population is likely to be very different, with a higher proportion of elderly residents and lower proportion of young people than ever before. Please join WUF to discuss what these trends mean for planning, development, the economy, and everyday life in what could be a very different version of California.
