Can LA Get Small? The Rise of Co-Living and Micro-Living (NON-MEMBERS-use this form to register)

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED.  YOU MAY REGISTER AT THE EVENT.

California's housing crunch has forced many people to occupy increasingly smaller spaces as they've down-sized and taken on roommates to make ends meet. In a country where abundance and bigness is prized, this trend is often lamented. Although, a growing group of urbanites and developers are starting to embrace smallness on its own terms, trading square footage for location and, perhaps most importantly, a communal spirit.

A raft of renovations and new developments turn the housing opportunities on its head by offering upscale, comparatively affordable units with shared living facilities and built-in luxury amenities. They envision urban living as a shared experience that may challenge the typical multifamily apartment development model. Drawing inspiration from college dorms and co-working, they emphasize sociability rather than personal space or even private space.

Cities are deciding how to classify and regulate this new housing type, and developers are trying to figure out the right formula -- especially as they try to attract the right mix of tenants.  And, of course, with limited space and tremendous demand in Los Angeles, smaller may be the way to go.
